You will be greeted at Lalibela Airport and transferred to your hotel. After lunch, you will embark on a 42 km drive to Yemrehane Kirstos. Along the way, you'll experience a stunning array of landscapes, including majestic mountain ranges. This hidden gem among the churches near Lalibela features a monastery perched atop a sacred lake within a natural cave, showcasing a beautiful example of late Axumite architecture.
After breakfast on Saturday morning, you will head out to explore the vibrant local market. In addition to the stunning churches of Lalibela, this bustling Saturday market is one of the most exciting experiences in the small farming town. After enjoying lunch at a restaurant outside your hotel, we will continue our exploration of the first cluster of rock-hewn churches, including the iconic Church of St. George. These remarkable churches are meticulously carved from the very rock on which they stand, showcasing extraordinary scale, craftsmanship, and design. The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are divided into two clusters, located just hundreds of meters apart, with St. George’s Church situated to the southwest. These churches are separated by the symbolic River Jordan and interconnected by subterranean tunnels, earning them the nickname "the underground city." The northwest cluster consists of seven churches: Mete Medhanialem (House of the Savior of the World), Bete Mariam (House of St. Mary), Bete Mekel (House of the Cross), Bete Danagel (House of Virgins), Bete Debra Sina (House of Mount Sinai), Golgota, and the Holy Trinity Chapel. In the evening, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a traditional shoulder dancing performance at Torpido, a longstanding cultural landmark in the historic city of Lalibela.
After breakfast, we will continue our exploration by visiting the second group of churches, located about 300 meters southeast of the first cluster. This southeastern cluster consists of five churches: Bete Gabriel and Rafael (House of Archangels Gabriel and Rafael), Bete Markorius (House of St. Markorius), the House of Emanuel, and Bete Aba Libanose (House of Father Libanos). In the late afternoon, we will drive up to Mount Asheton to visit the cliff-cut monastery. Asheton Mariam is one of the most frequently visited churches outside of Lalibela and is believed to be the first project commissioned by King Lalibela before he established Roha. Located approximately 10 km from the small farming town now known as Lalibela, this church is rich in treasures, including King Lalibela’s hand cross and beautiful paintings. Perched at an elevation of 3,000 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking 360-degree views that are a favorite among tourists.
In the early morning, you will have the option to visit another cave church on the way to Lalibela Airport. This church is the most accessible for a day excursion, located just 6 km outside of Lalibela. Unlike the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, Nakutal’ab Monastery is a simpler cave church built within a shallow natural cave, featuring several holy pools fed by natural springs. It also houses many treasures, including paintings, crosses, and an illuminated leather Bible. After your visit, we will fly back to Addis Ababa, where you will be picked up and taken to your hotel. Note: Hotels will be arranged according to your preferences and comfort level.
