After breakfast, you'll fly to Semera, the capital of the Afar region, where your expedition crew will meet you at the airport. From there, you'll head directly to the Danakil Depression, reaching the hot and dusty city of Afdera for lunch via a well-paved road. Shortly after Afdera, the route turns to bumpy gravel until we arrive at the base of the Erta Ale volcano. After a brief rest, we'll embark on a short trek to the crater's rim (approximately 30 minutes on foot). Standing at 613 meters, Erta Ale is one of Ethiopia's most remarkable natural wonders, featuring a base diameter of 30 km and a 1 km² caldera at the summit, which houses one of the world's few permanent lava lakes. Camping on the crater's edge while gazing into the glowing lava at night is an unforgettable experience! Accommodation: Camping at Erta Ale Volcano.
After having breakfast at the camp, we will embark on a roughly 4-hour journey to Hamed Ela, navigating a challenging road through the lava desert. Hamed Ela consists of a cluster of small houses located at the edge of the world, where the heat can be quite intense! In the late afternoon, we will drive from Hamed Ela to Lake Assal. Here, we will not only witness the traditional techniques used in local salt mining but may also have the chance to see camel caravans transporting salt blocks to the Ethiopian highlands. The sunset over the salt lake is a breathtaking spectacle! Accommodation: Afar Hut, Hamed Ela
We set out early in the morning to explore the stunning landscapes around Dallol. Situated 116 meters below sea level, Dallol is one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. The Dallol Volcano is blanketed in a thick layer of salt, yet it boasts fascinating salt formations, hundreds of fumaroles (gas vents), and acidic lakes in a variety of colors. After visiting other local attractions, we will make our way back to Dallol via Afdera and Semera, taking approximately 4-5 hours. Accommodation: Hotel in Semera.
